Planning Your Lunar Vacation is a travel guide to the world’s most exotic destination – our own moon. A nonfiction trade book for middle graders and up, it inspires readers to dream BIG and plan ahead to make the greatest adventure of their lives come true.
Chapter 1 offers dozens of must-see sights on the moon, from the historic Apollo landing sites, to features Earth-bound experts wish they could investigate, and fascinating formations on the moon’s mysterious far side. Readers list their favorites, mark their maps, and connect the dots to create their own itinerary.
Chapters 2 and 3 present information already known about the moon’s environment and living in closed systems to give the future traveler an overview of what to expect on their trip.
Chapter 4 points out that landing a job on the moon is a great strategy for getting there. There will be a need for scientists, facility engineers, construction workers, and transportation engineers, but also for tour guides, chefs, barbers, medical personnel, hydroponics farmers, artists, and innovators of all kinds. Successful job candidates will be able to perform multiple duties creatively.
Chapter 5 suggests ways for the reader to keep the moon at the top of their vacation wish list. Ideas include learning to locate their future destinations on the face of the moon (the moon is exotic and distant, but its large features are visible!), and preparing mental and physical toolkits for when their chance comes.
Today’s middle graders are SO lucky. They were born at exactly to right time to become the scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs who will bring the moon into easy reach. They will change the world in ways we can’t even imagine. Planning Your Lunar Vacation will spark their passion for space exploration.
“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.” – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (The Wisdom of the Sands)
